#69: The Cultural Significance of Fashion, Featuring the Director and Chief Curator of The Museum at the FIT, Dr. Valerie Steele
Fashion, like any other artform, is constantly changing and evolving with the times. A reflection of society’s defining spirit or mood at any given moment, fashion provides a unique window through which to grasp larger cultural, political, and ideological forces at play in the world.
Dr. Valerie Steele, the Director and Chief Curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, has been an instrumental figure in creating and giving shape to our modern understanding of the cultural significance of fashion. In her two-decade career at The Museum at FIT, Dr. Steele has personally organized more than 20 exhibitions and authored or co-authored more than 20 books on the topic.
Dr. Steele joined The IVY Podcast to talk about how the business of fashion is changing as the millennial generation grows into the industry’s target consumers, as well as the intersection and fashion and technology. If your wardrobe needs some further inspiration, Dr. Steele's got tips for how to develop your personal style.
